The year was 2050. I was had just a month away from graduating with a Masters in history. At this point of time getting the job you were best qualified for was simple. Getting a job you were passionate about was tough. This was due to a revolution in the system of placements where the entire profile was on record. Finally the doctor smiled, "It is nice to see so much patience in one so young. These are things, which the DNA never shows you. I prefer the old fashioned way of judging people."
I finally had to ask, "Why am I here?"
The silence returned but this time it was not uncomfortable. The doctor was no longer studying me. He appeared to be considering the question.

The world has become a well-oiled machine- efficient and lifeless. I asked you here because in you I saw someone out of his time. Someone who rightfully should have belonged to my era. And I need you to join a project, which I have spent half my lifetime to set up. I need you to study history for me."
"What is this project?" I asked curiously.
He handed me a paper, "If I have to tell you about this project I require you sign this contract with a ten year bond. If my project is leaked it could be used for purposes, which could change the course of time as we know it. He took me across the hall and I saw two black leather couches at the end of the room. He said with a serious tone, "This is my project."

"Why don't we sit down and talk."

But that is not what history is about. His is not a calendar of events. It is about people. Its about thoughts, passions and ideals rather than the actions which we here about. And the only way we can learn about our past is to live it. I need you my friend to live the past and tell the future about it."
This was too much for me to absorb within a short space of time. We sat in silence for hours. The doctor remained silent allowing me to absorb the facts.
I finally asked, "Did you say live in this world?"
The doctor nodded, "You have to live and become a part of the society you enter, sometimes for decades at a time. That is the only way you can learn about the history. However when you are brought back to the future only a few seconds would have elapsed and you would not have aged beyond the few seconds."
I stared at him, "Why me?"
The doctor quietly replied, "You answered your own question a few minutes ago when I offered you the two million. Driven by greed most men who enter the past may attempt to alter it to suit their own requirement. But you my friend are driven by passion not greed."
"But what if I inadvertently change the future?"
The doctor handed a small compass, "This is a chip which will warn you if any action you are about to perform will change the course of history. To make doubly sure you will be sent in a role which will be keep you close to the leaders who made history but you will not be required to take actions which affect the society at large."
"What??"
"This is the difficult part. Societies in the past have largely been male dominated. The only way we can keep you close to the men without having you called upon to take actions, which will affect the history, is if you lived as a woman.
